The evolution of coordination in outsourced software development projects: a comparison of client and vendor perspectives

چکیده

This paper examines the coordination of outsourced information system (IS) development, focusing on two sets of questions: How are these projects coordinated, and why? How do the coordination mechanisms evolve during a project, and why? Coordination mechanisms were classified into standards, plans, formal mutual adjustment, and informal mutual adjustment. Two studies were conducted, including seven and four cases from vendor and client perspectives, respectively. Based on these cases, the coordination mechanisms used in outsourced IS projects are examined, factors influencing the evolution of coordination mechanisms are identified, and a model of evolution of coordination is developed. The cases also revealed three scenarios for the evolution of coordination (non-coordination, consistent coordination, late coordination). The results show the client as pulling the outsourcing relationship toward a hierarchy structure, characterized by informal mutual adjustment, while the vendor pulls the relationship toward a market structure, characterized by standards, plans, and formal mutual adjustment. Implications for future research and practice are examined.  2002 Elsevier Science Ltd. All rights reserved.

Exploring the Contribution of Problems in Team-Level Functionality to the Failure of Offshore-Outsourced Software Projects

Offshore outsourcing has been growing steadily since the 1990s, and this trend of sourcing services from low-cost countries such as India and China will continue in the near future. Despite the inherent challenges of offshore-outsourced software development (OOSD) projects, organizations in high-cost countries engage in OOSD projects because of compelling cost differences. We investigated the t...

Exploring Failures at the Team Level in Offshore-Outsourced Software Development Projects

Offshore-outsourced software development (OOSD) projects involvemultifaceted risks throughout the project execution, as they are handed over tothird-party organizations and thus are exposed to more risks than in domesticoutsourcing or captive offshoring. We concentrate on failed OOSD projects inthis paper and analyze the unique aspects of such projects at the team level thatlead to failures. Us...

Offshoring of Application Services in the Banking Industry – A Transaction Cost Analysis

Gaining economic benefits from substantially lower labor costs has been reported as a major reason for information systems (IS) offshoring. However, many offshoring projects have failed to achieve expected cost savings, indicating that labor cost savings are offset by additional costs that arise in offshoring projects in certain situations. While previous research on IS offshoring has mostly fo...

Research Note - The Role of Organizational Controls and Boundary Spanning in Software Development Outsourcing: Implications for Project Performance

P research has studied how the selection and use of control portfolios in software projects is based on environmental and task characteristics. However, little research has examined the consequences of control mode choices on project performance. This paper reports on a study that addresses this issue in the context of outsourced software projects. In addition, we propose that boundary-spanning...

Critical Issues of Offshore Software Development Project Failures

Increased globalization and the consequent dispersion of IT activities around the world have driven the growth of offshore outsourcing. The share of offshore software development (OSD) in the high-cost countries has grown tremendously since the 1990s and this trend will continue in the coming years. Software development projects continue to experience poor performance problems because of their ...
